Area of activity: linguistic integration
Integration occurs first by means of language, education and training. Having good German-language skills provides a foundation for educational success and living independently in Germany. For people with an immigrant background, language skills are a prerequisite for equal access to education, training, work, the economy and society. In addition, people with an immigrant background who speak many languages offer an important resource.
Further developing the practice of language training
As part of the nationwide integration programme, emphasis is placed on the practice of supporting German language skills and also on supporting multilingualism as an extra skill. As they pass through the education system, learners have different needs at different stages. With this in mind, the approach adopted in this area of activity involves taking a person's life history into account. The following areas are focused on:
- systematically supporting German as a second language in children's daycare centres and schools
- teaching basic German-language skills on the integration course
- further developing language training to accompany vocational training, professional life and professional further training
- using multilingualism as a potential skill for training and career.
Recommendations for the field of activity of linguistic integration
In conjunction with many experts, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) produced recommendations on these subjects and published them in autumn 2010. The results in the area of activity of language training are available in a separate publication.
Information about the implementation status of the recommendations in these two areas can be found here.
