Migration advice for adult immigrants

The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees is responsible for giving immigration advice to adult immigrants. It develops the relevant programmes and manages their practical implementation.

The advisory programme

Two advisory programmes for immigrants are provided using federal funds

  • the Migration Advisory Service for adult immigrants (MBE) funded by the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI)
  • the Youth Migration Service (JMD) funded by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMFSFJ).

Individual advice and active support

Learning German, getting to know your new environment bit by bit, making the effort to start school, an apprenticeship or work as soon as possible – all these things require considerable commitment from every immigrant. The MBE and the JMD both provide advice and support immigrants as they take their first steps to settle into German life.

The role of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees

The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees is responsible for implementing migration advice for adult immigrants (Residence Act § 75 no. 9 in conjunction with § 45, paragraph 1).
Its remit includes developing the conceptual guidelines and proactively managing the implementation of these in practice.

The Migration Advisory Service for adult immigrants (MBE)

Based on professional case management, full-time immigration advisors ascertain immigrants’ personal need for support. The advisor and the immigrant then develop a support plan together. This allows the advisor to actively involve the immigrant in the agreed integration measures on the basis of a fixed timescale. In this context, the BAMF places particular emphasis on considering all aspects of integration support. With regard to acquiring adequate German language skills, this means including the state-funded integration course in the overall support programme in an appropriate way.
