The Tasks

Providing and exchanging information related to asylum and migration

The objective of the EMN is to meet the information needs of the institutions of the European Union and of its Member States when it comes to migration and asylum by providing up-to-date, objective, reliable, comparable information in order to support policy-making in the European Union (EU). The EMN is also to supply the public with information on these topics. This further includes establishing and managing a computer-aided information exchange system which is available to a variety of user groups via the Internet.

The EMN operates in the areas of research, analysis and documentation. Data and information from a variety of sources are collected, exchanged, analysed and made available in an easily-accessible format. This takes place in the shape of reports, studies, Ad-Hoc Queries, Informs and Bulletins. You can find these sorted by topic under EMN Publications. There is also a Glossary on terms related to asylum and migration which is intended to ensure that uniform terminology is used in the Member States.

Reintegration Expert Group

The Reintegration Expert Group (REG) working party was established with the Work Programme for 2014. This group addresses aspects of voluntary return, reintegration and forced return.

Wichtige Mitteilung

There have been several occasions very recently in which people have pretended to be employees of the Federal Office and asked for an interview at which they questioned asylum applicants intensively. This took place in some cases on the pretext that a second hearing was allegedly needed. Important: The Federal Office does not conduct home visits! These individuals do not work for the Federal Office. The Federal Office has therefore filed criminal charges. If something similar happens to you, or if you observe anything of this nature as a carer, please report this to your local police station.Interviewers from reputable survey institutes who are currently conducting interviews as part of research projects in which data are collected on a voluntary basis clearly state who they are working for. They also give the name of the survey institute and prove this by showing the appropriate documentation. This means that you can make enquiries should you have any doubts.
