Federal Police

The Federal Police Force works closely with the federal and regional security authorities. The Police Force also ensures border protection and implements the Federal Office's decisions.

The Federal Police Force reports to the Federal Ministry of the Interior. Its tasks within the security system of the Federal Republic of Germany are extensive and varied. These are specified in the Act relating to the Federal Police Force and also in many other legal regulations, for example, in the Residence Act, the Asylum Procedure Act and in the Air Security Act.

The Federal Police Force works closely with the police forces and other security authorities at federal and regional level. In addition, the Police Force also co-operates with many foreign border authorities.

Securing border protection

The Federal Police Force is also responsible for protecting the country's borders. This includes:

  • controlling the borders on land, on water and in the air,

  • controlling traffic crossing these borders. This also includes checking travel documents and authorising border crossings, as well as carrying out border searches and intercepting weapons.

Working with the Federal Office

The Federal Police Force's task of border protection takes place not only at national borders and in the vicinity of borders, but also at airports and seaports where traffic crosses borders. The Federal Police Force also ensures the security of borders on the country's railway systems and on trains. In addition, it implements the Federal Office's decisions: If a third country is responsible for an asylum application, the Federal Police Force ensures that the foreign national is transferred to that country.
