Putting people first: providing security, creating opportunities, embracing change

Nurturing a Culture of Welcome

Most newly-arrived immigrants in Germany have a lot of questions, and are keen to establish contacts with people in their new area. The Federal Office therefore supports projects which welcome new immigrants and help them to take their first steps in their new environment.

The language barrier is only one of the obstacles which immigrants face after their arrival in Germany. They frequently have to arrange appointments themselves, even though they do not know their way around, and they have to find out how to get to public authorities and doctors. The Culture of Welcome projects have voluntary helpers supporting new immigrants as sponsors, mentors or guides when it comes to questions and problems occurring in everyday life.

Support in everyday concerns

The volunteers take time, are open-minded when it comes to other cultures, and are tolerant. They accompany individuals or families at appointments with public authorities, to doctors' appointments, in kindergartens and schools. Others help in finding accommodation, show immigrants around town, hold German conversation groups and provide homework tutoring. The projects frequently also incorporate sports, culture and other leisure activities where newly-arrived immigrants and locals can meet one another and engage in activities together.

Practical help in finding their way around is complemented in the projects by making immigrants feel that they are welcome here.

Offers which promote a welcome culture frequently:

  • provide initial information on advice and integration services
  • accompany immigrants when they need to visit public authorities and help them complete forms
  • organise intercultural guided tours and walks
  • hold German conversation groups
  • run sports, cultural and leisure events
  • set up intercultural meetings or get-together cafés.

This assistance is free of charge as a rule.
