The stages of the German asylum procedure

Date 15 February 2018
type Booklet

The examination of asylum applications is one of the most important tasks performed by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF). This is a responsible, demanding task, given that decisions are taken on people, in complex procedures, taking diverse competences and stringent legal frameworks into account.

This brochure will provide you with an overview of the most important aspects of the asylum procedure, such as applicants’ personal interview, the steps taken in the decision-making process, recent activities to optimise procedures, as well as the place which the activities take up within a European context.

It can be downloaded here.

display as attention: Notice

The brochure "The stages of the German asylum procedure" describes the procedure as per October 2016.

There has since been a change to the procedure: the so-called "cluster procedure" no longer applies (see p. 29).

The following amendment additionally applies to family reunification for persons entitled to subsidiary protection (see p. 21): Under the current provisions, family reunification involving spouses coming to Germany to join a spouse who is entitled to subsidiary protection and whose residence permit was issued after 17.03.2016 is not possible under the Residence Act until 31 July 2018.
The possibilities of family reunification in accordance with the Dublin III regulation remain unaffected. The admission of family members on humanitarian grounds also remains possible in special cases of hardship.

An updated version of the brochure is planned for early 2018. Until then, all current information is available on our website under "Asylum and refugee protection".

Wichtige Mitteilung
