According to the Statistical Office of the European Union asylum seekers in Germany are more frequently granted protection than in other EU countries. In 2009, 33.8 percent of all foreign nationals applying for asylum in Germany were granted a residence permit. In 2008, this overall protection rate was as high as 37.7 percent.
