The Federal Office is responsible for conducting academic research into migration- and integration-related issues. In line with the core tasks of the Federal Office, the Research Centre observes migration movements to and from Germany, and analyses the effects of migration processes.

The research areas

The Research Centre observes the process of the integration of foreigners and individuals with a migration background, and with the information that it gathers makes a vital contribution to the further development of integration measures at Federal level. Further research areas include economic migration, migration for the purposes of education, the impact of immigration, displacement-based migration, returns, and the security-relevant aspects of immigration.

The research pursues an interdisciplinary approach which is characterised by a multiplicity of methods. Staff members are involved from such disciplines as sociology, economics, political science, geography, history, psychology, statistics and migration studies.

The terms of reference for the research

The terms of reference of the research that is carried out at the Federal Office can be summarised under the terms analysis, evaluation and advice:

  • Analysis: The migration and integration processes in Germany are observed and described based on the data available, and are incorporated into the international context where necessary.
  • Evaluation: The measures used to manage migration and to support integration are evaluated, as is the administrative practice pursued at the BAMF.
  • Advice: The knowledge acquired serves to advise policy-makers, so that it is integrated into the management of migration and integration.

The Research Centre works with academic institutions in Germany and abroad to perform these tasks. As an important state agency dealing with issues related to migration and integration research, it makes a fundamental contribution towards ensuring that a transfer of information takes place between Academia, administration, policy-makers, industry and the public.

The work of the Research Centre is documented in annual activity reports (see "Downloads").
