The report deals at first with migration in general, differentiated by countries of origin and host countries, nationalities, Federal Länder, gender and age as well as the reasons for taking up residence in Germany. Then the different immigrant groups are looked at in more detail. In addition to the analysis of the quantitative development of the individual immigrant groups, the relevant legal bases are elucidated in detail.

Then the report looks in detail at emigration by Germans and foreign nationals and compares the results with other European states. In addition, the report looks at the problem of illegal migration, the development of the foreign population and of the population with an immigrant background.

Some of the migration reports that have been issued to date contain extra chapters on such topics as the EU's enlargement to the east, demography, and migration and development.
