Who we are

The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees is the centre of excellence for asylum, migration and integration in Germany. As a superior Federal authority among the subordinate authorities of the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community, our range of tasks is extremely diverse.

The Federal Office offers varied and socially-relevant fields of work in the realm of political decision-making, active organisation and administrative action.

The Federal Office has adapted in recent years, and has reorganised its work with an innovative IT laboratory, agile working methods and professional project management as well as controlling.

Where we work

The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees is headquartered in Nuremberg, Bavaria’s second largest city. The historic building, the Südkaserne in Frankenstraße, now houses the BAMF, which is a superior Federal authority among the subordinate authorities of the Federal Ministry of the Interior, Building and Community.

Our decentralised structure allows us to have a presence in all the Federal Länder, with roughly 60 properties. At our locations, we conduct asylum procedures, coordinate integration at regional level, and carry out migration tasks.

We see ourselves as a family- and employee-friendly public authority. That is why it is a special concern for us and a central com-ponent of our personnel policy to continuously promote the reconciliation of work, family and long-term care.

In particular, the possibility of striking a healthy balance between professional demands and private concerns, depending on the respective life situation, is becoming increasingly important for many employees.
We already offer our staff numerous options such as flexible working hours, part-time schemes, mobile working or a parent-and-child office.

The BAMF’s Skill-Building Centre: Integrative, interactive skill-building

The Federal Office has faced up to a large number of challenges since the Skill-Building Centre was founded in Nuremberg in 2015. In light of this this, a sustainable concept for current and future skill-building measures has been created at the Skill-Building Centre: the skills initiative entitled "Shaping Development, Promoting Skill-Building, Living the Community". The aim is to integrate past measures and new forms of learning, mutual exchange and communication.

The Skill-Building Centre has set up additional branches in our Berlin and Düsseldorf locations in order to be able to also offer our training courses on a decentralised basis. Our staff can expect a wide and very varied range of further training and skill-building activities: for example, from basic training for newly-recruited colleagues, through relatively highly time-consuming training in asylum or integration, to regular workshops for managers. This enables all areas of the BAMF to benefit equally.

Remuneration

The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) can provide you with opportunities to work either as a Federal civil servant, or as an employee covered by collective agreements. Civil servants are remunerated in accordance with the Federal Civil Servants’ Remuneration Act (Bundesbesoldungsgesetz – BBesG), whilst employees covered by collective agreements are remunerated in accordance with the provisions contained in the Collective Agreement for the Public Service (TVöD Bund).

In addition, all employees receive a special annual payment, and all those whose work performance has been particularly outstanding receive a performance bonus.

Employees of the Federal Office will be receiving a monthly job allowance until 2023. Depending on the respective career path, the allowances are as follows

  • in the ordinary service 85.00 EUR
  • in the intermediate service 110.00 EUR
  • in the higher intermediate service 125.00 EUR
  • in the administrative service 140.00 EUR
