As the National Contact Point of the European Migration Network (EMN) the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees hereby cordially invites you to the national conference on 7 October 2025 on the topic "Family reunification – between fundamental rights and the need for migration control".
More than 20 years after the European Union Directive on family reunification came into force, the migration of third-country nationals joining their family members remains a politically relevant issue. To mark this occasion, the European Migration Network (EMN) conducted a study on the state of family reunification in the Member States.
To present this study, the National Contact Point of the European Migration Network (EMN), based at the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), is organising a conference in Berlin on 7 October 2025 entitled
"Family reunification – between fundamental rights and the need for migration control"
At the one-day event, experts from Germany and other European Member States will discuss developments in family reunification. The conference will address the tension between fundamental rights guarantees and the requirements of migration control. It will explore how these two priorities can be balanced when managing migration.
The invited experts and policy-makers will examine the latest restrictions on family reunification in relation to refugee migration and the expansion of reunification options for skilled immigrant workers, discuss challenges and examples of good practice, and compare family reunification policy among European countries. In addition to keynote speeches, there will be panel discussions with representatives of EU member states, such as France, the Netherlands and Spain, as well as with experts from the German Federal Ministry of the Interior, the Federal Foreign Office, civil society, local authorities and the legal profession.
The conference language is German and English, with simultaneous translation provided.
We look forward to welcoming you on 7 October at the European House in the heart of Berlin.
Registration is now open. Please note that your registration is only valid once you have received a confirmation. This conference is intended exclusively for those in the relevant field of expertise.
Deadline for registration is October 1, 2025.
