The European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) supports the EU Member States in implementing the Common European Asylum System (CEAS) with regard to asylum and refugee protection.
The European Council held a special meeting in Tampere, Finland, in March 1999, where it resolved on the creation of a Common European Asylum System (CEAS). The European Asylum Support Office (EASO) was established by Regulation (EU) No 439/2010 of 19 June 2010 in order to support the implementation of the CEAS and facilitate practical cooperation between the EU Member States on asylum-related matters. The EASO commenced operations on 1 February 2011.
Given the pressure on the national asylum and reception systems in the EU+ Member States, which has been growing since 2015 and is frequently unevenly spread, the European Commission proposed in April 2016 to widen the mandate of the EASO as part of the CEAS reforms. Regulation (EU) 2021/2303 came into force on 19 January 2022, and replaced the EASO with the EUAA.
