The focus is placed on analysing worldwide migration movements, especially those towards Germany and Europe, and the impact that this has. This ranges from immigration, through reception of individuals in search of protection (for instance as part of resettlements) to emigration and return. There is also regular reporting on migration (annual migration report). A core focus is placed on describing and analysing migration movements and groups of immigrants. It is also worth mentioning the projects for the European Migration Network (EMN), which is co-funded by the European Commission. This involves drawing up regular studies, which as a rule involves issues related to the mangement of migration and asylum.

In November 2023, further simplifications to immigration law came into force with the Law and the Ordinance on the Further Development of Skilled Labour Immigration, which build on the Skilled Labour Immigration Act of 2020. The aim is to increase the immigration of skilled workers from third countries to Germany. The new regulations will be evaluated by the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) and the Federal Office's Research Centre (BAMF-FZ) between 2025 and 2027.

With the revision of Section 12a of the Asylum Act (AsylG) in January 2023, the previous state-run asylum procedure counselling provided by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees was replaced by an authority-independent counselling. From 2025, the Research Centre of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees will evaluate the existing counselling programme on behalf of the Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community.

The research project "Resettlement: Living situation in the country of first asylum and in Germany (RED)" examines the admission and integration process of refugees coming to Germany via the resettlement program (RST) and the federal humanitarian admission program from Turkey (HAP Turkey) (so-called resettlement refugees). The study is conducted by the Research Centre of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF-FZ) in cooperation with the Chair of Prof. Dr. Martin Kroh for Methods of Empirical Social Research at the University of Bielefeld.
