The Federal Government's Migration Reports address migration movements in Germany, and provide a comprehensive overview of annual developments in immigration and emigration. They have been drawn up by the Federal Office on an annual basis since 2005. A double report for 2016/2017 was released in January 2019.
The report starts by dealing with migration movements, broken down into countries of origin and host countries, nationalities, Federal Länder, gender and age, as well as purposes of residence. Then the different groups of immigrants are looked at in greater detail. In addition to an analysis of the quantitative development of the individual groups of immigrants, the relevant legal bases are elucidated in detail.
The Report then goes on to look in detail at emigration by Germans and foreigners, and this is followed by a European comparison of immigration. The Report also looks at the problem of illegal migration, and at developments in the foreign population as well as in the population with a migration background.
Some years' Migration Reports that have appeared so far contain extra chapters on topics such as the EU's enlargement to the East, as well as demography and migration and development.
