The Federal Office conducts academic research into migration and integration issues in order to gain analytical information enabling immigration management. The tasks to be done include analysis, evaluation and providing advice to policy-makers.

Recent publications
Between tolerated stay and right to stay: What are the effects of the Opportunity Residence Permit, and for whom?
The BAMF Brief Analysis 3|2025 examines issuance patterns and effects of the Opportunity Residence Act (§ 104c AufenthG). This regulation came into force at the end of 2022 for a period of three years, granting long-term tolerated individuals an 18-month provisional right of residence. This Brief Analysis offers an initial interim assessment of this regulation, which remains unique in Germany to date.

Living Conditions and Participation of Ukrainian Refugees in Germany
The joint research report by the Institute for Employment Research (IAB), the Research Centre of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF-FZ) and the Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP) at DIW Berlin provides an overview of the living conditions and participation of Ukrainian refugees in Germany. The study focuses on the family situation of Ukrainian refugees, their housing situation, their intentions to stay, the development of their language skills and their labour market integration.

The BAMF Brief Analysis 02|2025 examines the intentions of tolerated persons to stay in Germany or return to their country of origin, and provides insights into individual decision-making processes.

The BAMF Brief Analysis 1|2025 provides an overview of the religious affiliation, religiosity, and everyday religious practices of refugees who came to Germany between 2013 and 2019.

The living situation of refugee men from Ukraine in Germany - results from the IAB-BiB/FReDA-BAMF-SOEP Survey
The BAMF Brief Analysis 8|2024 deals with the living situation and integration of male Ukrainian refugees who arrived in Germany between 24 February 2022 and 8 June 2022 and rounds off the findings from the IAB-BiB/FReDA-BAMF-SOEP survey published so far.

Social isolation and loneliness among refugees in Germany
Research Report 50 looks at the prevalence and development of social isolation and social loneliness among refugees in Germany. Social isolation is defined as the absence of close relationships and also of more casual contacts. Social loneliness, in turn, refers to the subjective perception of social integration in particular.
