Explanatory films

On what values is our coexistence founded? What rights, duties and freedoms do individuals enjoy in society? How far does freedom of the press and of opinion extend in Germany? The series of films that has been published by the Federal Office provide answers to these and other questions. The series consists mainly of attractive, descriptive explanatory films relating to the Basic Law and the values entrenched in the Basic Law.

There are a total of six episodes, which are available in five languages, namely Arabic, English, French, German and Farsi. In each language version, a presenter guides the viewer through the films. Simple animations illustrate these examples in an entertaining way, and thus complement the presenters’ explanations.

The film can also be downloaded simply and free of charge in mp4 format, and can for instance be used by people working on a part-time or full-time basis in lessons or at events.

The Basic Law (Grundgesetz) has served as the Federal Republic of Germany’s "constitution" since 1949, and embodies the fundamental principles of the country’s law. The Basic Law also sets out the fundamental rights, which take precedence over all other laws. The inviolability of human dignity, human rights and the freedom of the individual are fundamental principles of the Basic Law.

Equality before the law means that everyone is treated according to the same valid laws. No one may be discriminated against in court or in any other areas of life on account of their age, status, origin or faith, for example.

Women in Germany and and men enjoy equal rights. This means that they have the same rights in all areas of life. The Basic Law (Grundgesetz) stipulates that the State must take action against any form of unequal treatment.

Freedom of expression , format: Video, area: Authority

Everyone in Germany is free to express his or her opinions. The Basic Law (Grundgesetz) protects the freedom of the press and the right to demonstrate, for example. Insults and incitements to hate are however prohibited.

Freedom of faith , format: Video, area: Authority

Faith and religion are important to many people. The Basic Law (Grundgesetz) establishes the freedom of faith and conscience and the freedom to profess a religious or philosophical creed. The State and religion are separate in Germany.

Protection of marriage and the family , format: Video, area: Authority

A variety of different family and partnership models are the norm in Germany. For single parents or homosexual couples with children alike, the Basic Law protects the non-violent upbringing of children and defines parents’ duties of care, irrespective of the individual family model.

The brochure entitled "The Basic Law - Cornerstone of our society" provides answers to these and other questions based on everyday life. It explains in straightforward language the significance of the Basic Law and how it applies to everyday life in Germany. The aim of the brochure is to help you in adjusting to life in Germany.

It is rounded off by reports written by both women and men, some of whom have immigrated to Germany themselves, and who relate what they personally associate with the Basic Law and its contents. Several info boxes additionally provide references to further information and key contacts.
