There are various different ways in which researchers can enter Germany for the purposes of teaching and researching.
Residence for research purposes
In order to obtain a residence permit in Germany for research (in accordance with section 18d of the Residence Act [AufenthG]), you will need to have concluded a hosting agreement or corresponding contract with a research facility to carry out a research project.
This can be any organisation where research is carried out, from a University through to a research department within an undertaking.
A residence permit for research entitles you as a researcher to also engage in teaching. You may furthermore carry out research in other EU States for a limited period, and do not need to apply for an additional residence title there. You can find more information on this at Mobility in the EU (see at "Further information/articles").
Once you have successfully completed your research activity, you will receive a residence permit for up to 18 months to look for a job in Germany if you can prove that your livelihood is ensured during this period.

Researchers with special subject knowledge, as well as instructors and research assistants in prominent roles, may be immediately permitted to stay for an indefinite period. You will find more information on this in the section entitled "Settling in Germany" (see at "Further information/articles").
Residence for doctoral studies
As a doctoral candidate, you have several ways of engaging in doctoral studies in Germany. The type of residence title issued particularly depends on how your livelihood is funded in Germany.
- If a work contract or the hosting agreement has been concluded with the research facility, a residence title for work or research purposes, or an EU Blue Card, may be possible.
- If you are employed on a half-time basis or less, a residence title for the purposes of studying may also be considered.
- Scholarship-holders receive a residence title for the purpose of studying.
There are also a variety of ways of ensuring your livelihood during the doctoral study phase. These may for instance include savings of your own, or a guarantee provided by your parents.
