The Federal Office publishes data updated on a monthly basis concerning developments in the asylum applications filed in Germany, on the ten countries of origin with the largest number of applicants arriving, as well as on the decisions made by the Federal Office concerning the asylum applications, and statistical data on transfer requests that have been filed in the Dublin Procedure.

The national figures on asylum

The Federal Office publishes data updated on a monthly basis concerning developments in the number of asylum applications filed in Germany, on the ten countries of origin with the highest number of applicants arriving, as well as on the decisions made by the Federal Office concerning the asylum applications, and statistical data on transfer requests that have been filed in the Dublin Procedure. The statistics also provide information on how the data have developed in comparison to previous years.

In accordance with Article 4 of Regulation (EC) NO 862/2007 of the European Parliament and of the Council on Community statistics on migration and international protection, the Federal Office is the national data supplier for the European Commission (Eurostat) in the field of asylum statistics.

Differences between national and European asylum statistics

There is a need to take the following differences between the two statistical systems into account when comparing Eurostat’s asylum statistics with the national business statistics:

• the figures represent the totality of asylum applications filed (first and follow-up applications), as not all EU Member States break down these figures separately,
• several asylum applications which are filed within one month (first and subsequent follow-up applications) are only counted as one application; the same applies to decisions taken in the same quarter,
• the granting of refugee protection in accordance with the Geneva Convention on Refugees includes recognitions in accordance with Art. 16 a of the Basic Law (GG) and with section 3 subsection (1) of the Asylum Act (AsylG),
• the granting of subsidiary protection relates to subsidiary protection under European law in accordance with Art. 15 of the Qualifications Directive – that is to section 4 subsection (1) of the Asylum Act,
• the granting of humanitarian protection includes the prohibition of extradition and deportation in accordance with section 60 subsections (4), (5) and (7) of the Residence Act (AufenthG); these are referred to as decisions granting authorisation to stay "under national law concerning international protection" in accordance with Art. 4 §2e of Regulation (EC) No 862/2007,
• decisions on the Dublin procedure, discontinuation of proceedings and withdrawals are not counted as decisions.
