Potentials of Migration between Africa and Germany ,
The volume sheds light on central aspects of migration between Africa and Germany and connects current threads of discussion of migration and integration research as well development research with one another. Of central interest is the potential that migrants bring with them and that makes them to agents of economic, social and cultural changes in the host- as well as the societies of origin.
The features in this anthology examine positive and negative effects of migration for both Germany and the African countries of origin. The articles are organized around four key issues:
As part of the heading "migration structures", causal factors for migration from Africa to Europe are analysed while effects of European migration policy on local development receive particular consideration. The section "integration and resources" investigates, how the profession qualification of African migrants is dealt with on the German labour market as well as elaborating the question of acceptance and how migrants deal with rejection on the labour market. Additionally, one feature addresses the topic integration of African youth in Germany.
The section "transnational commitment for the development of countries of origin" considers both the situation in Germany as well as several African States. Thus, the commitment of the Ethiopian Diaspora for the peace process in the country of origin is investigated as well as the differences in the development of Moroccan Diaspora in Germany and France. Complementary, one article deals with cultural competencies that Moroccan Diaspora in Germany brings with it. Another feature article finally provides an overview of experiences with different Diaspora groups in Germany that were gained within the framework of development cooperation. The commitment of migrants in the countries of origin is examined both by keeping an eye on knowledge transfer and Capacity Building on the ground as well as analysing the meaning of social networks in the country of origin and the host country.
The concluding section is considering further the topic "migration and development as a discourse". Subject is the consideration of gender equality within the framework of development cooperation using the example of Nord Rhine-Westphalia. Additionally, with Ghana as an example, the Diaspora discourse in countries of origin is investigated including its effects on the development of Ghanaian Diaspora in Germany.
The feature articles provide various insights for the integration as well as the development sector. The volume shall offer an impulse to relate insights in the fields of migration/integration and development with one another and to entangle them in the most profitable way possible.
