The core aim of this joint project is to explore the role of family and upbringing in the processes of engagement with, and disengagement from, violent Islamist extremism and terrorism – through a gender-sensitive lens. To achieve this, radicalisation processes will be examined at the individual level using case studies, while Salafist gender and upbringing discourses will be analyzed at the group-specific level. In order to continuously identify points of intervention for gender-sensitive deradicalisation work related to family and education, the involvement of experts and practitioners is also planned. The primary goal is to develop a concept for practitioners that focuses on the importance of gender roles within family and educational contexts.

The joint project therefore aims

  • to conduct a gender-sensitive analysis that examines the significance of family and child-rearing in Salafist radicalisation and conversion processes among women and men, taking into account their respective gender roles.
  • a gender-sensitive analysis that conducts basic research (including integrating findings from right-wing extremism) and produces practice-oriented results.
