Analyses of Religion in the Migration Context ,

The project "Analyses of Religion in the Migration Context" (AReMi) focuses on religion, religiosity and religious practice and their significance for the social participation of immigrants and their descendants born in Germany. For this purpose, secondary analyses are carried out on existing data, in particular the datasets of the study "Muslim Life in Germany 2020" and the IAB-BAMF-SOEP Survey of Refugees.
Contact
Religion can bring together people from different backgrounds, for example through shared values or interactions at religious events. However, it can also lead to the exclusion and marginalisation of people with a different religion or a divergent understanding of religion. Against this background, the AReMi project examines the significance of religion in the lives of immigrants and their descendants and its importance in terms of social integration. The analyses have a special focus on Muslims, the largest religious minority in Germany.
The topic is approached through secondary analyses, i.e., based on existing datasets, initially mainly with datasets of the Research Centre for Migration and Refugees (BAMF-FZ) itself, such as from the study "Muslim Life in Germany 2020 (MLD 2020)" or the IAB-BAMF-SOEP Survey of Refugees.
Another objective of the project is to strengthen the exchange and cooperation with other researchers working on the topic of religion in the context of migration. This includes the participation in national and international conferences. Moreover, in 2022, the Network for Empirical-Analytical Social Research on Muslims (NAFS) was founded with the involvement of the BAMF-FZ. Its aim is to promote the exchange of – especially quantitatively working – researchers in this field. Emphasis is thereby placed on current research findings and methodological aspects.
Findings from the project
The BAMF Brief Analysis 5|2024 examines the use of German in parent-child communication in families from Muslim-majority countries of origin on the basis of data from the study "Muslim Life in Germany 2020". The main finding is that there are no significant differences between Muslim and non-Muslim parents.
The BAMF Brief Analysis 1|2025 examines the religious affiliation, religiosity and religious practices of refugees based on data from the IAB-BAMF-SOEP Survey of Refugees from 2021. A particular focus lies on the attendance of religious events and the use of digital religious contents and services.
