Resettlement is a humanitarian reception programme for persons who have been displaced across the borders of their countries of origin and who are staying in their "first states of refuge". Resettlement entails receiving those refugees who demonstrably receive insufficient protection in their current residence situation, or where it does not appear acceptable for them to remain there permanently. The programme has been implemented by the Federal Government since 2012 in agreement with the Federal Länder.

The Research Centre has observed the German resettlement programme since its inception. The accompanying research evaluates administrative data from the programme. In addition, qualitative interviews were conducted with 112 resettled refugees nationwide in 2012 and 2014. So far, results on the reception and integration experiences, as well as on the migration decisions of refugees who have been admitted under the resettlement procedure, have been published.

Under the title "Resettlement in Germany – What does the admission programme for particularly vulnerable refugees achieve?", an analysis is carried out of the fundamental principles underlying the German resettlement programme, in which a total of 2,919 persons were resettled between 2012 and 2017.
