Since 2005, in accordance with its statutory mandate, the Research Centre at the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF-FZ) has been conducting research on a wide range of migration and integration issues. All along, the BAMF-FZ sought to provide scientific advice on migration and integration policy – in a well-founded, practical and interdisciplinary manner. To mark its 20th anniversary, the BAMF-FZ is hosting an international academic conference in Nuremberg.
While the first publication in 2005 provided a general overview of migration and integration data available at the time, the BAMF-FZ today successful conducts its own empirical research projects and is part of national and international networks in numerous specialised fields. In addition to analysing migration trends in Germany, its interdisciplinary research teams explore the social impacts of migration processes as well as monitor and evaluate integration processes. The research results provide, among other things, scientifically sound recommendations for forward-looking migration and integration policies, give important impetus to politics and society, and feed into political decision-making processes.
The anniversary conference provides an opportunity to look back, but above all to exchange views on current issues and future developments in our field of research.
Programme
We are excited for two inspiring keynote speeches and a panel discussion. The keynote speeches will be held by the renowned scientists Prof. Dr. Birgit Glorius, Professor of Human Geography with a focus on European migration research at Chemnitz University of Technology (Deputy Chair of the Expert Council (SVR) and former Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees), and Prof. Dr. Dominik Hangartner, Professor of Policy Analysis at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich and Co-Director of the Immigration Policy Lab.
The panel discussion on "How can migration and integration research unfold social relevance?" will be an interactive exchange between Dr. Natalie Welfens (University of Duisburg-Essen), Prof. Dr. Annette Treibel (PH Karlsruhe, retired), Prof. Dr. Daniel Thym (University of Konstanz and Chair of the Scientific Advisory Board of the BAMF-FZ), and Ben Mason-Sucher (More in Common).
Further highlights include inspiring panel sessions on issues such as skilled labour immigration to Germany, the living conditions of refugees in Germany, and im-/mobility decision-making. In addition, there will be a poster and a Meet the Data @ BAMF-RDC session.
The conference will be held in German and English (without translation) in person.
The final programme will be available shortly in the download area below.
We look forward to your participation – to reflecting together on past achievements and, more importantly, to looking ahead.
Registration: The registration deadline is 11 January 2026.
